As researchers say only 40% of LTC homes routinely involve residents in end-of-life care discussions, the University of Waterloo developed Better tArgeting, Better outcomes for frail ELderly patients (BABEL), a person-centred approach that involves residents as active participants, putting their values and wishes first. The approach also has care teams focusing on situations most likely to happen to a resident and how outcomes of different treatments might align with their individual goals. The researchers found residents who participated in BABEL also avoided unhelpful and potentially harmful treatments at end of life.
