At the front edge of Baby Boomers, retirees are downsizing or moving into gated senior communities, says the Senior Medical Fellow at the American Council on Science and Health. The internet of things, the world of smart thermostats and light bulbs, has arrived to make aging at home increasingly feasible, less expensive and safer in the form of passive home monitoring. What is needed, he argues, is knowing whether loved one are getting out of bed, getting around the house, eating their meals, taking their medications and using the bathroom. He believes motion sensors, video cameras and smart appliances can answer those questions without them being asked or being overly obtrusive on their privacy.
