The Alberta Government will set aside an additional $11 million to add 20 paramedics in Calgary and Edmonton and a further 26 in smaller cities and towns to provide home care to seniors in non-emergency situations. Under the program, paramedics can provide suturing and wound treatment, diagnostics and electrocardiograms, IV treatments and blood transfusions. It's estimated that 90% of cases referred to community paramedics can be treated without the necessity of a hospital visit. The program began last year in Calgary and Edmonton, with nearly 14,000 calls.
