The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta embarked on a six-month research project looking into how best to integrate emerging health technologies into care delivery models. A spokesperson for the group says there's a fine line between a desire to implement every advance and the need to maintain the safety and privacy of patients. For example, he states that the increased prevalence of wearables means the college may issue guidelines governing the collection and storage of personal data. Ultimately, he says that physicians will need to embrace digital technologies and AI in medicine as the wave of the future in care. He adds the patient-physician relationship, so long skewed to the healthcare professional, is becoming more balanced as individuals use technology to become more informed and take a greater role in their own health.
