Pilot projects for improving the health outcomes for Indigenous people in Alta. are under way:

  • The Maple Maskwacis Virtual Health Service is providing virtual care to residents of Maskwacis where they can more easily access a physician or mental health therapist from home. Nearly 200 people were reached by the service. Paramedics who are taking someone to the hospital will share information with patients about the virtual program and download the app for them during the ride; and
  • As there were issues with ambulance teams getting lost because they don’t know where they're going on the settlement, another pilot project will see emergency medical responder training for members of the Métis Settlements of Alberta. The training will be accessible to those living in the communities, community fire and rescue or first responders and community leaders and elders.

Indigenous health experts in the province agree these projects can be duplicated in other regions, adding they can be scaled up and tailored to the different diverse communities across the country.
