Amazon is launching a clinic in the coming months for a small number of workers, with a goal of expanding in 2019. Apple, meanwhile, is in a hiring frenzy for its employee health clinics called AC Wellness. Amazon is focusing on the supply chain. It bought an internet pharmacy, it has a grocery delivery business through Whole Foods, and it’s working on an initiative to reduce healthcare costs. Apple is instead building health-tracking tools for the iPhone and Apple Watch. Owning clinics can allow them to try out initiatives with their doctors and garnering feedback from real patients who are their own workers. It makes a lot of sense, health experts say, especially for tech companies that are heavily focused on secrecy.
