In British Columbia, men make up the majority of overdose deaths. This is why Fraser Health is trying to help men open up about substance abuse. The campaign includes a four-page guide, video and posters that offer pointers to friends and family concerned about someone else’s substance use. The campaign’s the result of consultations by Fraser Health with people at various stages of recovery. The study focused on men who made up 82% of all overdose deaths in B.C. in 2017. The province’s mental health and addictions minister believes such conversations remain painful for most people because of discomfort and fear about talking about addiction openly.
