As part of its More Is Not Always Better campaign, which attempts to demonstrate how patients can play a role in reducing unnecessary care, Choosing Wisely established four questions patients should ask their doctor to better understand if a test or treatment is necessary or not:

  1. Do I really need this test, treatment or procedure?
  2. What are the downsides?
  3. Are there simpler, safer options?
  4. What happens if I do nothing?

Choosing Wisely does believe the bond that patients form over time with their family doctor makes it easier for patients to speak up when they have questions about their care.
