These are the first national guidelines for high-risk drinking published in Canada. Research shows more than half of Canadians aged 15 and older drink more than recommended. The findings also show that high-risk drinking often goes unrecognized and untreated, as does alcohol use disorder (AUD). Researchers make 15 recommendations for family physicians, NPs and other healthcare providers, ranging from how to ask about a patient's alcohol use, to how to manage withdrawal symptoms and treat AUD over the long term. In 2017, alcohol was linked to 18,000 deaths and cost health systems $5.4 billion.
