The program - implemented at all 68 nursing home organizations in New Brunswick - substitutes non-drug therapies for antipsychotics for seniors living with dementia. The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) says that in the first two years of the program, 34% of LTC residents who were prescribed antipsychotics to manage their dementia were able to be weaned off the drugs. A further 18% had their dosages reduced. The CFHI adds that despite these findings, there was no increase in aggressive behaviours among residents with dementia but no underlying psychosis.
