Information from CIHI showed unintentional falls represented one-third of all injury and trauma-related ER visits in Canada in the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Of those visits, 152,504 resulted in hospital stays, which the institute says averaged two weeks per patient. That compares to an average of just over one week of hospitalization for all other causes. CIHI notes that 72% of all ER visits as a result of unintentional falls were by patients younger than 65, but a similar percentage of patients admitted for treatment were seniors, 65 or older.
