In its annual snapshot of healthcare expenditures, the Canadian Institute for Health Information forecasts spending of $242 billion this year, a 4% increase over 2016 and higher than the rate of increase seen over the past decade. Hospitals (28%), drugs (16%) and physician services (15%) represent the largest consumers of healthcare funding but CIHI notes that the share of expenditures for drugs is accelerating relative to other sectors. CIHI also produced a series of infographics depicting the following:
How much Canada spends on healthcare;
How spending growth changed over the last 40+ years;
Who pays for health services;
Where money is being spent in healthcare in 2017;
Current trends in hospital spending;
Changes in the share of health spending on seniors; and
International comparison of Canada's health spending.
