NBHC Care Experience

A report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information finds that patients who receive home palliative care are two-and-a-half-times more likely to die at home. That's key, it says, as 75% of respondents note their preference would be to pass away where they live. Despite that, just 15% of patients who died in fiscal year 2016-2017 in Alta. and Ont. received publicly-funded palliative home care. Most palliative care (62%) in the last year of life takes place in a hospital setting. CIHI also finds that cancer patients are three times more likely to receive palliative care than those with other chronic diseases such as heart failure, dementia and COPD.
