CIHI reports that from 2001 to 2017, death rates among women due to alcohol rose 26%, five times higher than the rate of increase among men. It also finds that over 25,000 women were hospitalized as a result of alcohol consumption in fiscal year 2016-2017, a YoY increase of 3%. The number of men sent to hospital for alcohol-related reasons rose 0.6% during the same period. Other findings from the CIHI study include:

  • Girls age 10 to 19 had higher hospitalization rates than boys the same age, at 69 and 44 per 100,000, respectively;
  • There were 3,079 deaths due to conditions entirely caused by alcohol in 2015, with more than half due to liver disease. By comparison, 2,066 people died in motor vehicle accidents in 2015; and
  • Almost 80,000 hospitalizations were due to conditions entirely caused by alcohol in FY2016-2017, similar to the number of heart attack hospitalizations (77,000).
