The Canadian Institute for Health Information estimates that 3% of individuals with dementia are under the age of 65. In fiscal year 2015-2016, 2,481 early-onset dementia patients were admitted to hospitals. CIHI reports dementia patients under the age of 65 tend to have longer hospital stays than seniors but are less likely to require home care or LTC care upon discharge. It was also determined that just over 3% of dementia patients receiving care at home are under the age of 65. For the most part, those individuals are cared for by a spouse (44%), while for seniors with dementia, it's generally the children providing the care (58%).
