CIHI found cases of pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, rose from 3,109 in 2017-2018 to 4,440 for the year ending Mar. 31, 2022. Over that same time, the rate of bedsores for every 100 hospitalizations rose from 0.13 to 0.19. Wounds Canada says people at risk of developing pressure injuries aren’t routinely screened and identified, while strategies to prevent these wounds aren’t put in place fast enough. The organization calls for increased public awareness and advocacy to provincial and territorial governments, as well as MPs.
