A CIHI study looking at trends in opioid prescribing finds that YoY, prescriptions for the top six opioids declined between 2016 and last year, from a high of 23% for fentanyl, to just 1% for tramadol. Four drugs (fentanyl, hydromorphone, morphine and oxycodone) accounted for over half of all opioids dispensed in 2017. CIHI found that nationally, there was a 10% YoY decrease in the rate of prescribing opioids, with B.C. leading the pack at 14%, followed by Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia at 12%. New Brunswick saw a 6% decrease.
