A report from CIHI suggests that nationally, in the fiscal year 2016-2017, there were 16 opioid poisonings per day that resulted in hospitalizations, a 19% increase from the daily hospitalization rate in FY2014-2015. Hospitalization rates varied across the provinces and territories overall, with northern and western Canada having generally higher rates. CIHI also finds that adults age 45 to 64 and seniors 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years but the fastest-growing rates were for those age 15 to 24.
