In its first-ever look at death rates and hospital readmissions following heart surgery, research from the Canadian Institute for Health Information finds that rates in Canada are comparable to those in other countries, such as the U.K. Specifically, the percentage of patients who died in hospital within 30 days of cardiac surgery was between 1.3% and 3.3%, which CIHI characterized as "low." It also estimates 30-day readmission rates following cardiac procedures at between 7.4% and 9.5%.
