CIHI says hospitals are gathering real-time data in an effort to improve patient flows and ensure resources are optimized. It highlights two approaches to the use of command centres in Ontario: one that is paper-based at Windsor Regional Hospital and a digital process at Toronto's Humber River Hospital. There, a bank of screens constantly monitors all hospital operations, from bed availability to housekeeping. It plans to expand the command centre to areas such as quality experience and home monitoring. Meanwhile, the Windsor facility says its completely analogue system, which used two years of paper charts to determine patterns, plans to switch to a digital command centre and apply the process to its surgical program.
