CMA finds 48% of physicians are depressed

A national physician health survey found that nearly half of respondents screened positive for depression, up significantly since the 2017 survey (33%). Other findings include:

  • One quarter of physicians and residents experience severe (10%) or moderate (15%) anxiety;
  • Six in 10 respondents indicated their mental health is worse now than before the pandemic;
  • More than half of physicians and medical learners (53%) experience high levels of burnout; and
  • More than one-third (36%) of respondents had thoughts of suicide at some point in their lives, and 14% had thoughts of suicide in the last 12 months.
