MacEwan University's $4-million clinical-education facility is expected to pilot a new approach to healthcare training. It's designed with a co-ordinated, team-based approach in mind and features 21 exam rooms with video cameras, mental health consultation rooms, a family consultation room and a minor procedure room and lab. The space was designed to streamline delivery of care via a team of family physicians, nurses, clinical health assistants, a mental health specialist, a chronic disease management nurse and a clinical pharmacist. It already has a patient list of 5,500 and will be used to train up to 12 family medicine residents. Patients will sign a consent form and a video is streamed live to doctors in another room to observe residents dealing with patients, making the interactions more realistic.
