As patients with have vague symptoms can often face delays, the aim is to catch the disease earlier and prevent them from being referred for a variety of tests for different forms of cancer instead of starting treatment. NHS England says the approach was first developed in Denmark, where a system with 10 specialist rapid diagnostic and assessment centres were introduced so patients can receive all their tests under one roof. The aim is that every patient is either diagnosed or given the “all-clear” within 28 days. The initiative offers the prospect of improved coordinated care, though questions remain about whether a shortage of diagnostic specialists will present an issue to a full roll-out.
