Copenhagen-based Nord Architects is building a series of centres for patients with Alzheimer's and dementia that feel like villages or cities, rather than institutions. In France, Nord broke ground on a "Alzheimer's Village" which is arranged into small neighbourhoods oriented around shared services, like a hairdresser, grocery store and library. These shared facilities will be open to the public, a decision aimed at helping to integrate the nursing home into the town. The design reflects the layout and look of the surrounding French towns. The architects are also working on a project in Denmark with a village-like nursing home on a hillside and two inner courtyards, enabling patients to be outside without the staff needing to worry about them getting lost. Meanwhile, the architects in Norway are planning an entire city around a nursing home, where the people that live there act as guides to help patients with dementia find their way home if they get lost.
