A former Canadian Senator appearing at a CMA-sponsored health summit contends the current healthcare system prevents innovations from taking hold. He explains that each province and territory has its own health silo, which blocks the sharing of ideas that leads to innovations. He adds that a lack of competition stifles innovation and called on Ottawa to foster national approaches in healthcare delivery that includes private providers. Another panel member at the summit says physician fee-for-service payment models removes an incentive for doctors to test and adopt more efficient healthcare delivery systems.
