Experts say changing nature of overdose crisis calls for more aggressive response

Experts are calling for the expansion of safe supply and say governments need to look at formalized arrangements for harm reduction services. Over 32,000 Canadians died of toxic drug overdoses since 2016. Health Canada says 76% of all overdose deaths involve fentanyl but an increasing number of overdose deaths involve more than one substance and more overdoses are being linked to smoking. The trend makes things difficult for safe consumption programs, which are geared more toward needle users.
