The team of four doctors in Oromocto, who are the first to operate under the Family Medicine New Brunswick model, will be responsible for approximately 4,800 patients. The collaborative care team is a new approach for the province, as a similar model was implemented already in Alberta. The Department of Health anticipates the new model could encourage doctors to set up in the province. More teams are expected to be rolled out, but no timeline or regions for implementation was announced. Doctors taking part in the program believe the system gives them the ability to better communicate and to have access to patients’ medical records on a regular basis. They add that they’ll be able to spend more time with patients, helping them better manage chronic disease and offer more preventative care management.
