The average wait time for a home care assessment in Moncton is 88 days. The provincial average is 60 days, which puts the region behind the provincial target of 85 days from two years ago. In 2016, the Auditor General criticized the Department of Social Development over its Home First strategy, which aims to keep vulnerable adults in their homes and communities for as long possible. The program, a report on nursing homes found, didn’t have implementation dates for initiatives or specific performance targets, and lacked public reporting. The AG estimated the province will be in need of 10,776 nursing home beds by 2036 - a number impossible to finance. As of September, the average wait in the Acadian Peninsula was 40 days. In Fredericton it was 60 days, while Saint John was at 62 days.
