A survey conducted by Health Canada suggests 15% of Canadians aged 15 and up smoked cigarettes last year, an increase from 2016's figure of 13%. Men (17%) were more likely than women (13%) to smoke tobacco. N.L. had the highest provincial rate, at 20%. Cannabis use was also at 15% in 2017, an increase from 2015's 12%. Once again, males (19%) were more likely to use cannabis than females (11%). B.C. had the highest percentage of cannabis users at 23%. The percentage of people drinking alcohol remained unchanged YoY in 2017 at 78%. Twenty-one percent admitted to exceeding guidelines for low-risk alcohol use at least once last year.
