The provincial agency that monitors the health system and recommends whether or not services or devices should be publicly funded sent a report to the province’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recommending psychotherapy in individual or group settings delivered by nurses, psychologists, psychotherapists and social workers be publicly funded for depression and anxiety. The province usually follows Health Quality Ontario’s recommendations and the ministry’s now considering the proposal to develop a provincially-funded psychotherapy program. HQO suggests funding three types of psychotherapy: CBT, interpersonal therapy and supportive therapy. It estimates the funding could cost the province between $11 million and $68 million per year over the next five years.
