As both provincial health networks struggle with ER wait times, the president of Horizon Health Network says physician and nurse recruitment are a top priority. Staff schedules are leaving little room for work-life balance and she indicates it’s the one of the main reasons causing nurses to quit. In its first Report to our Communities, Horizon points to improvements being made to emergency care, surgery backlogs and mental health services. Highlights include:

  • Only 2% of patients seen in the newly established Patient Flow Centre at Horizon’s Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital are leaving without being seen;
  • $6.4 million is being invested to expand surgical program, including enhancements to surgery programs in smaller community hospitals; and
  • 70% reduction in the network’s waitlist for mental health services through introduction of single-session/one-at-a-time therapy.
