HQO releases standards of care for opioids used in acute pain, chronic pain, addiction settings

Health Quality Ontario issued quality care standards for opioid use to direct healthcare providers and patients in the following three scenarios:

• Acute pain;
• Chronic pain; and
• Opioid use disorder and addiction.

HQO notes that as part of the standards for dealing with pain management, healthcare providers will be asked to consider non-opioid treatments first. The standards are meant to address gaps in patient care relating to opioid use and to make care delivery more uniform.
