To help make a case for e-prescribing services, a survey conducted for Infoway finds that 40% of patients who lost or damaged their paper-based drug prescription - nearly 1.7 million people - returned to their physician for a fresh scrip. It estimates the cost in lost productivity, travel, etc., associated from the extra trip to the doctor's at $35 million. Provincially, the breakdown is as follows:

  • $2.6 million for the Atlantic provinces
  • Ontario: more than $10 million;
  • Alberta: $7.7 million; and
  • B.C.: $6.7 million.

Infoway adds that over 700,000 patients with lost or damaged paper scrip decided to forego the prescription altogether, including 70,000 in the Atlantic provinces.
