The Lancet showcased the medical system in a series of articles and commentary authored by a collection of scholars and public figures across the country. Disparities between health outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous is one of the central themes the journal links directly to social determinants of health. One piece in the series charts the development of universal healthcare. The author warns that without continuous innovation and updates, Medicare risks losing relevance. She believes one definitive step for change is the expansion of Medicare coverage to include prescription drugs. Lancet’s editor says the series applauds the successes of the healthcare system while highlighting its challenges, which include coping with an aging population and longer-than-average wait times for elective surgery.
