An interim report from Health Canada finds that for the first part of the year, 1,179 patients took advantage of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) legislation, representing 0.9% of all deaths nationally. That compares to 803 doctor-assisted deaths in the first six months after the federal law went into effect in June of 2016. Health Canada says the average age of a MAiD patient was 73 years old and cancer was the number one cause, cited in 63% of cases.
