Deaths from MAID saw a thirteen-fold rise since its 2016 legalization, responsible for 4% of all deaths in 2022. Only cancer, heart disease, COVID-19, accidents and strokes ranked higher than MAID as causes of deaths in 2022. Anticipated expansions of MAID to include those suffering from mental illness, expected to come into force this year, were pushed back to 2027.
