Health Canada reports 1,525 medically-assisted deaths between July 1 and Dec. 31 of last year. That represents a 29% increase in the number of patients using MAiD from the first half of 2017. Cancer is the number one reason for individuals opting for MAiD, accounting for two-thirds of all cases. Medically-assisted death represents about 1% of all deaths recorded during the six months, which Health Canada says is consistent with other jurisdictions with similar laws.
