Health Canada will invest $19 million over four years to address Manitoba's diabetes epidemic on First Nations under a healthcare deal that will focus on foot care. The First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (Nanaandawewigamig) and the First Nations Diabetes Leadership Council in Manitoba led the development of First Nation Basic Foot Care Program. The funding allows Manitoba First Nations to follow through with standing recommendations for care from Diabetes Canada. In Manitoba, diabetes affects 18.9% First Nations people, compared to 4.5% of the rest of the population. First Nations people are also 18 times more likely to have a diabetes related amputation. Until now, nine Manitoba First Nations had advanced programs in this specialized area, 21 others have basic services and the rest - 34 mostly northern communities have no services.
