Symbiosis is a co-housing project run by the school of graduate studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. It pairs students requiring safe, affordable housing with neighbourhood seniors in need of companionship. It's considered to be a type of social prescribing, which is gaining a foothold, following efforts to treat loneliness in the U.K. Ontario has also started a social prescribing pilot project in 11 community health centers. According to a study out of Brigham Young University, loneliness is as damaging to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
