The WHO says in 2022, rates of measles infection rose by 18% globally over the year prior, with deaths attributed to the disease rising 43% in that time and 37 different countries reporting large or disruptive outbreaks. PHAC reported just 12 cases of measles in all of 2023 but amid fears of Canada’s immunization rates dipping during the COVID-19 pandemic, risks are growing the virus could make a return. Measles is highly contagious and will infect almost every unvaccinated person who comes in contact with it. The virus, characterized by a rash and fever, can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and respiratory failure.
