Medavie Health Services New Brunswick, which operates the N.B. Health Link system, calls the model the next best thing to having a family doctor. It’s also rejecting suggestions from the New Brunswick Medical Society that its system is luring doctors away from opening their own clinics. Medavie says N.B. Health Link uses doctors who have other roles in the healthcare system, including ER doctors and hospitalists and who are willing to put in additional hours without operating their own office. The system was launched in 2022 to reduce the wait list for family doctors. People on the list are registered and then referred to one of 11 clinics around the province for primary care. Medavie says they get a similar continuity of care as with a family doctor.
