Town Square is a working replica of a 1950s downtown, built and operated by the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Centers in Southern California. The imitation town is the biggest U.S. investment so far in what eldercare specialists call reminiscence therapy, which was found to improve mood, cognition, and communication level of dementia patients. In the town, caregivers encourage people with dementia and age-related cognitive impairments to talk about past events and their own life experiences, often aided by photos, music and other prompts that stimulate memories. The centre partnered with healthcare company Senior Helpers to build Town Squares around the country. Another centre is under construction in Baltimore. Franchise sales are underway. Amid the retail meltdown, malls are being considered as an interesting option to build these centres for treating the elderly.
