Between Jan. 2016 and June of this year, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) estimates that over 9,000 Canadians died as a result of opioid use. Of the over 2,000 deaths which occurred in the first half of 2018, PHAC says 94% were the result of accidental overdoses and three-fourths of those involved fentanyl. Meanwhile, in a report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), it was found that between 2016 and last year, ER visits from opioid poisoning rose by 73% in Ontario and by 23% in Alberta. Nationally, hospitalizations from opioid poisoning grew by 27% over the past five years.
