It's estimated that falls costs the province’s healthcare system about $250 million annually. Almost 40,000 New Brunswickers visit an ER for a fall injury every year, making these injuries the leading cause of ER visits in the province. Horizon Health Network’s ER data shows the average age of its patients injured by a fall is 70, while across Canada, in 2021-22, 75% of those who required because of a fall were over 65 years old. A fall prevention clinic, where seniors are being assessed for fall risk by an interprofessional team, is underway in Minto. As part of the pilot, personal care plans are being developed for each senior to reduce their risk. The plans are shared with primary healthcare providers who refer their senior patients to the clinic. A report on the province’s pilot project will be ready in March 2024.
