A research group estimates 1,700 people are being infected with Omicron for the first time each day. That works out to 213 infections per 100,000 New Brunswickers, nearly 2½ times the national average of 87. Researchers say the number of infections is likely even higher when reinfections are included. The hazard index is calculated based on vaccine protection, current infections and spread, healthcare system impact and mortality. N.B.’s index is 2.95 - the second highest in the country after N.L. at 2.98. The group believes nearly 54% of the province's population was infected with Omicron at least once. The national average is 49%.
