Concerns were raised over a staffing shortage that caused a partial shutdown at the Moncton Hospital. In reaction to this, the province is hiring six nurse practitioners to improve access to primary care. Experts predict these new positions won’t fill the gap, adding that roughly 20,000 people in the province are currently waiting for a family doctor. In Nova Scotia, nurse practitioners can set fees for service in private practices, while in New Brunswick, nurse practitioners treating patients - like a physician - cannot charge the province for patients they see. That is something nurse practitioners in N.B. would like to see change.
