As data from the province’s two health authorities suggest hundreds of non-urgent surgeries are cancelled every month, the president of the New Brunswick Medical Society wants the government to understand the domino effect they cause the health system. Dr. Serge Melanson believes more flexible staff schedules would be a good start in fixing the problem. Still, he explains, procedures don't always run on time, which is where he believes the real problems begin. For his part, Dr. Ben Hoyt, chief of surgery at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, suggests increased access to home care, new nursing home beds, and improvements to the surgical scheduling system. He also urged New Brunswickers to live healthier lifestyles and to provide more care for aging or sick family members.
