The provincial government has promised to find a way to maintain oncology services at the Grand Falls General Hospital and the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Joseph de Saint-Quentin, following a Vitalité Health Network's decision to discontinue chemotherapy treatments at the two hospitals, citing low demand for the services that made it difficult to maintain the nursing staff's accreditation requirements to ensure the integrity of medications travelling from regional cancer centres. Health Minister Benoit Bourque said the province's concern is quality healthcare in all regions of the province, including in rural areas. However, he said it doesn't mean the province will address the travel needs of every New Brunswick cancer patient, as there are patients in other parts of the province that may travel even further for chemotherapy treatments.
