As part of the provincial budget, the government expects to invest in the following initiatives to reduce wait times:

  1. Accessibility: Hire new family physicians and specialists, increase the number of nurse practitioners, introduce electronic consultation, and establish new autism centres;
  2. Quality: Accelerate adoption of EMRs, enhance the diabetes strategy as well as addiction and mental health services, create program for social pediatrics and add 1,000 new nursing home beds and memory care beds; and
  3. Proactivity: Add resources for suicide prevention and health promotion, implement a provincial dementia strategy and a colon cancer screening program, as well as establish a pilot project to free up acute-care beds by providing transition beds in special care homes for short-term stays.
