The New Brunswick government wants to change the way seniors and other vulnerable citizens are reimbursed for prescriptions filled outside the province. Health Minister Benoît Bourque says the government plans to amend regulations under the Prescription Drug Payment Act to remove restrictions that have impacted seniors, nursing home and special care home residents, Social Development clients, organ transplant patients and others who qualify under the plan. Bourque says it'll help two categories of people - people that have an accident or an emergency situation outside of the province, and "patients that need, for example, an organ transplant." The proposed amendments will allow beneficiaries to receive reimbursements for prescriptions filled out of province at the amount the program would have paid for a prescription filled in-province. The draft regulations are posted online for public review and feedback until Nov. 1. Bourque said the extra coverage shouldn't be a significant increase to the province's funding.
